Prayer Focus

He who has learned to pray has learned the greatest secret of a holy and happy life.”  William Law

Pray for Salem’s Student Ministry.  Pray for Pastor Chad Englund, Student Ministry Assistants - Michelle and Nikki, the student leadership team, and the adult volunteer staff.  Pray that their ministry will be fruitful in transforming students’ lives and joyful as they walk through the challenges of ministry.

Pray for Andrew and Emily P. serving with Cru at NDSU. Praise God for their new marriage as they continue to grow in their new roles and as a reflection of God’s love to those on campus. Pray for the freshmen men who are meeting for Bible study with Andrew. Pray that the Spring Break vision trip to Ghana, Africa would come together as God intends.

Pray for the homeless in our community that they may come to know the love and hope found in Jesus Christ. Pray for Lyn S. and the Salem Reach and Send Ministries as they seek God for wisdom and provision in finding volunteers to serve in various roles of our sheltering of the homeless the first week in January.

Praise prayer for Charlie who was born to Nick and Annie T. Wednesday afternoon.  Pray for Nick & Annie — for God’s wisdom as they teach Charlie about Jesus; pray for Charlie to love the Lord Jesus and be strong in his faith walk.

What’s Happening

Launching 2012—In God We Trust

Our coins and paper money proclaim "In God We Trust". Amazing!  As Salem begins 2012, we want to practice "In God We Trust" for our people and our ministry to our community and world.  During the 24 hours from 8:00 pm Saturday, January 14th, to Sunday, January 15th, every person who is a member or attender of Salem will be prayed for by name. Each person will be the focus of thanksgiving and petition for spiritual health and growth in 2012.

You are invited to sign up for a 30 minute block of time somewhere in this 24 hour period.  A prayer guide will be available giving you a list of people for whom you can pray and thank God for.  Scripture passages will be provided for guidance.  Will you commit to 30 minutes of focused prayer for other people?  Watch for sign-up information.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart...."  Proverbs 3:5-6

Beginning January 1st:  Join Pastor Glen in reading through the Bible in a year, using the Chronological schedule.  This is a reading plan where scripture is read daily in the order that events happened in Bible history.   Pick up a printed reading plan at church or go to Chronological Bible Reading Plan  (Back to the Bible site) or http://about.esvbible.org/resources/reading/ for the ESV Chronological Daily Reading Plan for the daily schedule.  The Men’s Discipleship Group on Wednesday mornings and the Women’s Discipleship Group on Friday mornings will be using this chronological reading plan for their study.

Bethany on University

There’s nothing better on a cold winter day than a bowl of rich, warm, flavorful soup.  With that in mind, Bethany on 42nd will host the 2nd Annual Soup of the Day event on Wednesday, January 18.  Our employees, members of our sponsor churches, volunteers and others provide a huge variety of soups and it is accompanied by hearty bread donated by a local bakery.

An offering at the door will provide funds to be used to enhance the quality of life for residents of Bethany Retirement Living.  Tours of Bethany on 42nd will be available.

Should you have any questions (or wish to provide a pot of soup), please feel free to contact me.

Colossians 1:15-23

The Supremacy of the Son of God

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[a] your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

Luke 10:1-10, 17

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two[a] others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field. 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.

8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you. 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
